Essential Question
How can we talk about diversity and community through kindness and inclusion to a younger audience?
Objective
By the end of the lesson, the students will actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding. Students will participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten—second grade topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Preparation
Watch the reading of the book by rangers or read the book, "All Are Welcome," by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman within your class.
Materials
Use either the first page with tables and chairs, or complete the whole class creation by using the second page with the table. Please resize for individual classroom needs.
Procedure
Choose from the activities below, drawing or classroom.Drawing activity: If the book is available in class, open the book on an overhead projector. If watching the book read by rangers, stop the book on a page that shows all the different students. Then have the students find four different characters and draw them each on the chairs around the table. Tell the students to leave one chair empty, this will be their own chair. After they get done drawing four characters, ask the students to draw themselves with their favorite shirt or attire. Then prompt the students to draw their favorite thing to share on the table. Lastly, ask the students to share with the class or small groups what they chose to share with their table. Classroom creation: Cut out the table. Assign each student to draw a different character from the book in the outline below. Then ask the students to draw and cut out something they would bring to the table and share. Display the art work in your classroom.
Vocabulary
Prompt the students to recall what they’ve seen in the book and ask if they heard any words they didn’t understand. When able, define and discuss these words with the class: community, diversity, adversity. Community: a group of people with shared experience. Diversity: all types of differences such as race, religion, language, disabilities, traditions, and gender can be introduced this way. Adversity: a difficult challenge.
