Picnic at Lunksoos Boat Launch

NPS / Grace Kirk
Enjoy a relaxing picnic next to the East Branch of the Penobscot River. The land and watersheds within the monument hold special significance to the Penobscot Nation and for the Wabanaki people of Maine. Multiple picnic tables and benches are available here for use, as well as open grass areas if you prefer to bring a blanket to sit on. Whether you arrive by canoe, bike, or car, the iconic view of the Penobscot River is a great choice to stop and enjoy the views during your visit. There are no trash cans on-site. Help preserve the beauty of the landscape by making sure to pack out what you packed in.
Enter by Swift Brook Road until you see a sign for Lunksoos areas. Use caution when traveling on the Swift Brook Road, which is a gravel road. All gravel roads in the area are shared with logging and equipment trucks. It is important to drive slowly, keep to the right side of the road, and yield to oncoming trucks.
This scenic picnic area can be enjoyed starting late May until late October. The seasons at Katahdin Woods and Waters NM vary and can change quickly. Depending on the time of visit, visitors may expect company with mosquitoes, black flies, and deer flies. Prepare accordingly! Stay informed of areas that are opened and closed by checking on current conditions.
*Expect picnic tables to be propped up or buried in snow during the winter season.
