Crowds and Noise

In the Washington Monument, it can get crowded waiting for security, in the elevator, and on the observation and exhibit levels. Please be aware of these tight spaces as it can sometimes feel claustrophobic.

There is usually around 14-18 people that ride the elevator to the observation level together.

It’s generally quiet in the area outside of the monument. Noise level varies inside the monument but can get loud if crowded, and some areas echo.

Exhibits

• On the 70-second elevator ride up to the observation level, a video with sound plays the entire ride to share the monument’s history and importance.

• Once visitors arrive at the observation level, there are eight windows from which to observe Washington, D.C. One window on each side of the level has a step for children to see out and the ranger on duty can provide a periscope for those unable to see out the window. Some window areas have handrails under the window. Window areas each have a map with tactile elements for visitors to understand location and feel miniature versions of the monuments and memorials on the National Mall. There is also a map with pictures of what the window view is showing if a visitor cannot see out of the window.

• On the exhibit level, there are many tactile exhibits of the Washington Monument, including the original design, the inside material, stone fragments, and more.

• On the elevator ride down to the ground level of the monument, the lights turn off twice for visitors to see features on the interior walls of the monument. The ride down is approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Washington Monument Lodge

The Washington Monument Lodge is a small souvenir store where tickets to the monument are distributed. It is located on 15th Street, on the east side of the monument. Access to restrooms is located on the exterior of the lodge.
