On December 23, 2024, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden planted a Princeton elm tree on the west side of the South Grounds near the White House fence, Dale Haney, Superintendent of White House Grounds and Executive Residence, assisted with the planting.

In the background is the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building that houses many White House staff members. Construction of this Second Empire style building started in 1871 and was not completed until 1888. The building originally housed the departments for State, War, and Navy until the late 1930s and early 1940s.
