The Gunnison River, along with the forces of wind and weathering, have sculpted the canyon over the past two million years. The Black Canyon is home to a variety of ecosystems from the pinyon-juniper forest, gambel oak woodlands, inner canyon, and riparian community along the river. Black Canyon hosts both upland and canyon habitats with diverse plant and wildlife communities.
