Park rangers recommend setting aside two to four hours to explore Fort Monroe. 

An Hour or Less

If you only have an hour, you could either

• Walk through the Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center, or
• View the exhibits in the Casemate Museum, or
• Go on a guided tour, or
• Take a self-guided walking tour. While exploring the fort, you can see the moat, casemates, Flagstaff Bastion, Pet Cemetery, Parade Ground, Lincoln Gun, Chapel of the Centurion, Quarters No. 1, the Algernourne Oak, and much more.

Do all those things in about four hours!

If you have even more time, outside the stone fort are the First Africans in Virginia Marker, Continental Park, Old Point Comfort Lighthouse, Engineer Wharf, Outlook Beach, and Endicott-era batteries. You can also walk the boardwalk along the shoreline of Chesapeake Bay.
