When the park opened in the 1930s, it was one of several national park units in Virginia to be segregated. The National Park Service has recently commissioned a research project into uncovering the details of segregation in the national park sites of Virginia. The details of that report can be found here, Segregation in Virginia (1916 - 1965) or you can click on the image to be taken to the report.
