Park Roads

Most park roads are typically open between Memorial Day and late October as winter begins to roll into the Great Basin. Weather is the main factor determining whether or not roads are open or closed and can lead to variable opening and closing times throughout the year.

Park Road Descriptions

Visitor Centers - OPEN

Check hours for both visitor centers here. Visitor Centers close on some winter holidays.

The Great Basin Visitor Center (in Baker) closes during winter months. The Lehman Caves Visitor Center is open year round with longer hours in the summer.

Lehman Caves Tours - OPEN

Reservations are available up to 30 days in advance. Walk-up tours are offered as staffing permits but are not guaranteed. Park operations have become cashless. Tickets may only be purchased with credit/debit card.

A Lehman Caves closure is anticipated beginning October 2025 through the winter. Check the Infrastructure Projects page for project updates.

Winter Trail Information

Weather can change quickly at any elevation, so be prepared for harsh conditions. When hiking at high elevation be prepared for rain, hail, or snow storms at any time of the year. Temperatures and visibility can drop rapidly.

Most trails are at high elevation and have steep climbs. Be mindful for signs of altitude sickness such as headache and nausea. If you're feeling sick, descend right away. Sun exposure is also more extreme at high elevation, so be sure to bring hats and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water and salty snacks for longer day hikes.

Campgrounds

Campground, Pricing, and Reservation Information
All campgrounds require reservations and have variable booking windows up to 30 days in advance. Make reservations at Recreation.gov.

Park operations have become cashless. Campgrounds can only be paid via recreation.gov.

Lower Lehman Creek Campground is the only campground open year-round in the park. All others close with winter.

Water is unavailable in campgrounds. Water is available at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center year round, and at the Dump Station in summer and fall.

Fire Conditions

Effective 12:00noon on Wednesday, August 13, Great Basin National Park will be entering fire restrictions. Campfires, charcoal grills, and outdoor smoking will be prohibited. Gas stoves and smoking inside vehicles are permitted. These restrictions are due to critically dry fuels, combined with current and predicted hot and dry weather which will promote rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior.

Year-round regulations:
Fires are never allowed above 10,000 feet. It is never permitted to build your own fire ring. Collect only dead and down wood; cutting live trees or snags for firewood is prohibited.

Be fire smart; do not park your vehicle over grass or shrubs tall enough to touch the underside of the vehicle. Do not drag chains from your hitch. Please practice fire safety and enjoy your visit.
