Scattering of Ashes Permit

A permit is required to scatter human ashes within Grand Teton National Park and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway.

How to Apply:

Guidelines:

There are no designated areas for the scattering of cremated human remains so you will need to specify the location where you would like to go. You will also need to include a date, time, and party size. Spreading ashes is generally a very private moment. We suggest early in the morning or evening as good times. Since your permit does not grant exclusive use of any area, we also suggest you choose a more secluded location. If you are unsure about a location, you can submit your otherwise-completed application and we will work with you to find a place.

Restrictions for scattering cremated human remains include the following:

  • Not within 100 yards of a stream, river, or body of water.
  • Not in developed areas, historic or private properties, or culturally restricted areas.
  • The permit shall not grant exclusive use of any area.
  • Remains must be broadly spread on the surface, leaving no obvious piles.
    • Prior to arriving, please research how to spread the ashes properly. Consider obtaining and using a scattering tube.
  • Remains must be pulverized and may not be buried.
  • No flowers, urns, cairns, or other memorial marker shall be left behind.
  • Activities that may damage or significantly impact park resources are prohibited, including those specified in other regulations, i.e. fires or drones.

Grand Teton National Park and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway do not permit dispersing of human ashes via aircraft, or the dispersing of non-cremated human remains, or any non-human remains.
