Late summer conditions are in full swing here in North Cascades National Park. You’ll generally find dry and sometimes dusty trails, lower water levels, and plenty of ripe huckleberries in mountain basins. Many folks have been getting out and enjoying the backcountry, so please keep a low impact and leave no trace during your visit.

With all the ripe berries, there have been numerous black bear sightings throughout the park. These sightings serve as a good reminder to be diligent with your food storage and camp cleanliness.

While the North Cascades have received some beneficial rains during the middle of the month, it’s still only late August. Please continue to respect the park-wide fire ban and expect to see some haze from fires around the region.

Many trails have been logged out by the trail crew, but still expect brushy areas or downed trees in more remote reaches of the park. Most designated camps have year-round water sources, but water sources along trails may dry up or reduce to trickles this time of year.

You can check out the trail tabs below for more up-to-date information on specific trails. Check with one of our wilderness or climbing rangers if you need further information about your specific trip.

Backcountry Permits are required year round for all overnight trips in the park and they help us locate you in an emergency. Be sure to check the weather forecast, trail conditions, and closures beforehand. As always, leave a detailed itinerary with a friend or family member, including the date and time you plan to exit the backcountry.

Keep wildlife alive and well by keeping your distance and storing your scented items properly. When given the opportunity to obtain human food, habituation can occur and result in harm to the animal, even euthanization. Be a part of the prevention, not the problem.

Current Trail Conditions

Current trail conditions are reported by rangers and trail crew, and updated as frequently as possible. Please read the "general" condition for each trail when there is no recent update available.  E-mail us if you have trail conditions to report.

North Cascades National Park Service Complex is a dynamic, natural environment where events and conditions are unpredictable. There is a possibility that trail and campground closures, environmental conditions (such as snow, high stream crossings, etc.), natural events (such as fires, aggressive animals, etc.), or other NPS management actions may impact your trip.
