Throughout the country people like you are volunteering your skills and time. The Volunteers-In-Park (VIP) program allows the National Park Service to engage the public in meaningful ways of connecting to their land. Nearly 300,000 volunteers donate more than 6.5 million hours of service to the National Parks throughout the year. That’s more than $185 million in value.

Volunteers are essential to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore mission. We strive to connect our volunteers to their park in those meaningful ways. Continue below to find your opportunity.

Opportunities

Campground Host

Each summer Pictured Rocks has campground hosts serve for month long positions at Hurricane River or Twelve Mile Beach Campgrounds. Host work five days per week for a minimum of 20 hours per week. All campgrounds are rustic with vault toilets and central water spigots. A small solar panel is provided to assist in charging batteries.

Main responsibilities include informing campers of the area and camper’s registrations. Hosts do not handle any money or clean restrooms. Volunteers should be ready to serve in all types of weather conditions during weekends and holidays.

Au Sable Light Station

Connect visitors to the maritime history at the Au Sable Light Station. Here volunteers provide lighthouse climbs tours for 13,000 visitors each summer, many of whom hike or backpack in to explore this remote site.

Volunteers work with a ranger while giving tours and answer visitor questions in the museum. These are summer positions with a minimum commitment of one month, and shared housing is provided. Two volunteers are needed each month.
