Welcome to Steamtown National Historic Site! A Park Ranger will greet your group and provide a brief orientation and history of the park. This 10-minutes introductory program is included in each program below. 30 Minutes
Learn how steam was instrumental in the American Industrial Revolution. Using our sectioned locomotive exhibit as a visual aid, a Park Ranger will explain how an engineer and fireman work together to manage fire, steam pressure, and water volume to generate the power required to run a steam locomotive. 30 Minutes
From the earliest days of railroading, physics was used to move locomotives, many of which weighed over 100 tons. A Park Ranger will explain how turntables worked and allowed locomotives to enter specific stalls of the roundhouse by serving as a moveable bridge. 30 Minutes
Discover just how much work is involved in taking care of steam engines. At one time, the railroad yard at Steamtown needed 3,000 to 4,000 people to keep up with all the repairs necessary to run a railroad business. 30 Minutes

A Park Ranger will guide your group covering multiple stops throughout Steamtown NHS. Wrap up the tour at the Union Pacific No. 4012, also known as the "Big Boy", one of the largest steam locomotives ever built. If your group is interested in a train ride (and one is available that day), please indicate this below. On the form below, under "Program Name or Subject Requested/Self-Guided", please add the words "PLUS Train Ride" and a ranger will discuss train ride options with you directly.
