20th Alabama Infantry

Iron tablet located on Confederate Avenue at Fort Garrott. During the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, the regiment was assigned to Brig. Gen. Edward D. Tracy's Brigade of Maj. Gen'ls. Martin Luther Smith's (until 30 Dec 1862) and Carter L. Stevenson's 2nd Military District in Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Col. Isham W. Garrott. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Edward D. Tracy's (killed in action 1 May 1863) and Col. Isham W. Garrott's (killed in action 17 June 1863) Brigade of Brig. Gen. John S. Bowen's Confederate Forces at the Battle of Port Gibson, MS.

Later the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. Stephen Dill Lee's (assumed command 3 May 1863) 2d Brigade (Battle of Champion Hill, there after reorganized as the 3d Brigade) of Maj. Gen. Carter L. Stevenson's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg, and commanded by Col. Isham W. Garrott and Lt. Col. Edmund W. Pettus (captured and escaped 5 May 1863). Lt. Col. Pettus was the brother of Mississippi Governor John J. Pettus. Col. Garrott was promoted to Brig. Gen. on 28 May 1863, but died without knowing of it.
