Establishment of the National MonumentFrances Perkins National Monument was established by presidential proclamation in December 16, 2024. The national monument includes 2.3 acres of federal land managed by the National Park Service. This area includes the Brick House and other historic structures immediately around it. This land was a donation from the Frances Perkins Center. The national monument also includes almost 55 acres of non-federal land owned by the Frances Perkins Center, which has owned the entire 57-acre property since 2020. This section of the national monument includes hiking trails, prairies, woods, and marshland. Local stakeholders, including the Frances Perkins Center, were instrumental in obtaining listings for the site on the National Register of Historic Places and as a national historical landmark. They also advocated for the site to become part of the National Park System. Recently, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland met with the community to learn about their vision for the care and management of the site. Park Planning and ManagementDevelopment of this new park will be informed by a comprehensive planning process that will involve the local communities, key stakeholders, and the general public. One of the next steps in this process is for the National Park Service to develop a foundation document to further define the park and help provide basic guidance for long-term planning and management decisions. The National Park Service will also be working with the Frances Perkins Foundation and other stakeholders on more immediate management and visitor experiences. |
