Learn About the Park

Arguably all American workers have Frances Perkins to thank for some benefits we have today. Throughout her prolific career that included being the first woman in a presidential cabinet, she many causes of workers rights and benefits for everyone—men, women, children, immigrants, and diverse underrepresented communities of Americans. She also changed the minds of many colleagues who believed women could not hold top-level government leadership positions, opening doors for many other women.

Frances Perkins lived in various places throughout her life, but the Perkins Family Homestead in Maine remained her constant place to return and closest to her heart. She often credited visits to the homestead as a respite and inspiration. The homestead is now a national monument preserving her history and lasting legacy.
